Sky burial for me means being tied high up in a tree ,perhaps on a wagon.wheel or similar ,then hoisted back down on my birthday or longer if not quite picked clean by the full range of carrion eating birds and possibly a range of living things, including invertebrates, mammals ?
There are human traditions whereby the cleaned bones are kept in stone slab lined boxes below ground and even the skulls Brought out to party on special occasions.
This way I’d give life after death and therefore have life after death.
I’m cross and sorrowful I can’t gave the funeral of my choosing and the default position in the uk is now cremation which is personally WRONG on many levels, it’s pollution, a lot of co2,and twice as much nitrous oxide which is carcinogenic-especially for kids!
Cremation also denies future anthropology, ending the story within our bones,I recently had to witness my genius dad being burnt, now there’s nothing of him for future science to reveal.
As for taking the sting out of my death and perhaps snatching victory from the grave , it would be soothing me now if I knew that even though my life was a bit of a failure in that I made no real positive impact on this world, despite early in life having dreams and expectations of being someone who was going to make a difference… well I’m 64 and I left it too late ,for love, for making great art and music, too late to build an earthship, travel, restore habitats and rewind… A tree burial to me would give me a warm cozy feel about my death because I would be giving life literally to some new generations of beautiful birds .
As we know most species of birds have suffered devastating population declines since the 1970s , basically my life span ever since I showed up ,shits really hit the fan .The UK authorities apparently won’t allow me this spiritual closure for a life badly lived.
I doubt I could afford a specific shipping out to Tibet and going there specifically to die and hoping my wishes are honoured,
(I’m not even a bhudist!) could backfire- I might live another 20 years!!.
This stream of comments gives a glimmer of light at the end of the very long tunnel .
At least others are philosophising on the theme,
I suspect there are various motivations for being interested in skyburials or tree burials , only one or 2 of you will be nefarious!!
I’d love it if we could have new nature reserves that permit grouped tree top burials with fixed cameras to record the species that benefit and raise chicks and perhaps adjacent bird hides up in the canopy for twitches ( that’s not from our undead bodies but it’s the nickname for bird watchers.
Can anybody understand how giving life in my death in this way,
I seriously anticipate, would remove a lot of my FEAR OF DEATH which can become pretty strong?
Perhaps in us all keeping the idea alive ,the freedom will be returned in future .
I say returned to us because our ancestors exercised this very right ,certainly the charnel boxes of bones picked clean are found across the world , what date and why was this sacred practice outlawed … can we have our beautiful burial choice again please boss ???!!!!

Instead we have to build funerary mountains with bodies in skyscraper-high crypts.

I myself think it is ridiculous a person cannot consent to something because other people think it is disturbing. I mean, why would you care? I don’t think it is a fair thing that I can be made into ashes, but a spiritual practice I want to take part of is criminal? If I can prove to be of sound mind before my death, stating that the court should allow my plans on the grounds of spiritual practice that actually doesn’t hurt anyone but my eventually dead body- why would the court care? Bizarre that we don’t even have bodily autonomy when it is our own body.
